Bolt & Valve Service

This procedure is shared across Ion, Ion 2.0, and Ion XE — the spool valve itself is unchanged across all three generations. Model-specific o-ring sizes are called out in the specs table on each track's page.

The Ion’s bolt isn’t just the moving part — it is the valve. As it slides forward to close the breech, air transfer ports inside the bolt itself open and release pressurized air through it. There’s no separate valve assembly to speak of; the firing assembly (fire chamber, bolt, boltstop, breech, and swivel donut) does double duty as both the marker’s action and its valve.

Before you start: fully de-gas the marker before disassembling the firing assembly. Dry-fire it until it stops cycling with the air source disconnected. Never work on a pressurized system.

What you’ll need

  • 5/64” and 3/32” hex keys
  • Full o-ring kit for your generation (see the O-Rings & Torque Specs page for exact sizes)
  • Silicone-based, paintball-safe valve grease — avoid petroleum-based gun oil
  • Two lint-free cloths — one to clean with, one to set parts on

Removal

  1. Unthread the fire chamber from the breech section — it’s simply screwed on, no fasteners involved.
  2. Slide the bolt and boltstop out together. If they resist, it’s almost always grease buildup, not corrosion — don’t force it.
  3. Separate the bolt from the boltstop.
  4. The swivel donut, at the rear of the fire chamber, rarely needs removal for routine service — leave it attached unless you’re chasing a specific leak there (see Troubleshooting).

Inspection points

Check every o-ring you can see for flattening, swelling, or embedded debris — this is the actual cause of most “inconsistent velocity” complaints, more often than people expect from a leak they can hear. Pay particular attention to:

  • The rear bolt o-ring, where it seals against the breech
  • The o-ring inside the boltstop
  • The o-ring seated down inside the rear of the breech itself — visible if you look straight down through the feedneck

Reassembly and greasing

Grease the rearmost two o-rings on the bolt itself, plus both o-rings on the boltstop — liberally enough to fully coat them, but not so much that it globs or squeezes out visibly once seated. Excess grease is what collects debris and causes drag over time, not what prevents wear.

Seat the boltstop into the rear body half with its concave side facing the back of the marker, and push it in evenly until it stops. Insert the bolt into the boltstop/rear body, then thread the front body half back on. If the boltstop doesn’t seat flush, it’s almost always installed backwards or not pushed in evenly on one side.

Common misconception: bolt weight does not affect bolt speed. Speed is determined entirely by how fast the venting air escapes, not the mass of the bolt itself — worth knowing before you spend money on a "faster" aftermarket bolt expecting a speed change from weight alone.
