Troubleshooting
Start with the symptom that matches what you're seeing. Most Ion problems trace back to one of a handful of usual suspects — it's rarely as mysterious as it feels mid-game.

Leaking
Internally
- Pneumatic hoses loose, damaged, or not fully seated — replace with Ion-specific hoses only.
- A pneumatic banjo fitting loose or damaged — tighten, or replace with an Ion-specific fitting.
- Solenoid armature damaged or the marker overpressurized — replace the armature and confirm operating pressure is under 200 psi.
- Leaking down the barrel — one of the bolt o-rings or boltstop o-rings is damaged. See Bolt & Valve Service.
Externally
- Macroline fitting venting — degas, reseat the hose fully into the fitting, and pull back gently to confirm it's caught and sealed. Replace the hose if this doesn't hold.
- Air around the regulator — the bottle o-ring at the top of the regulator is likely damaged.
- Regulator seat contaminated or damaged — replace it (a used seat can be flipped and reused once before full replacement).
Inconsistent velocity or shooting down
- Barrel bore mismatched to your paint — adjust bore or paint quality.
- Air source running low, or tank not fully seated.
- Battery low — replace with a fresh, high-quality 9V.
- Regulator seat contaminated or damaged.
- SFT o-ring damaged, swollen, or missing (17/90) — see specs page.
- Liquid CO2 entering the regulator — see the CO2 note below.
Marker turns on but won't fire
- Battery low or dead.
- Solenoid clogged — disassemble, clean, and reassemble without lubricant. See solenoid service.
- Trigger set screws adjusted too far in, holding constant pressure on the switch. See trigger adjustment.
- Trigger switch itself damaged — this is a board-level repair, not user-serviceable.
- Regulator pressure too high (above 300 psi) — lower pressure and/or replace the regulator seat.
Breaking paint
- Battery low.
- Ball detents worn.
- Barrel bore mismatched to paint.
- Dwell set too high — lower it in small increments, testing between each change. See board settings.
- Vision eyes off, or covered in paint/debris — clean the eyes and the slot they sit in.
- Eye wiring harness damaged from a misaligned install.
Regulator seized or overpressurizing
Usually caused by dry adjustment threads rather than a broken part. See regulator service for the full rebuild and lubrication points.
Liquid CO2 is the biggest threat to the Ion (and any
marker running CO2). It forms more readily in cold, humid conditions or
during sustained rapid fire, and can cause regulator pressure spikes,
freezing, and seal damage. If you suspect it, shut off your on/off
valve and let the marker warm up rather than removing the tank — and
consider adding an anti-siphon tube if this is a recurring problem.
Common misconception: a heavier bolt does not shoot
faster. Bolt speed is entirely a function of how quickly the venting
air escapes, not the bolt's mass — don't chase a "faster" aftermarket
bolt expecting a speed gain from weight alone.
