Ion XE

Released in 2007 to fix the original Ion's biggest complaint — difficulty servicing the bolt — the XE redesigned the body around a one-piece fire chamber and body breech that comes apart from the back entirely. Routine bolt and firing assembly service needs nothing more than that rear cap off — no grip frame separation, no body splitting, not even opening the grips. Compare that to the Ion 1.0, where reaching the same components means separating the body from the frame and then unscrewing the fire chamber from the body breech to get at it. The regulator, ASA, board, and trigger carry over from the Ion 1.0 specifically — the 2.0's revised regulator and ASA don't apply here, and neither does its feedneck; the XE's feedneck is its own thing, using NXT threading instead of the Ion/Shocker SFT threading the rest of the family shares.

What's actually different from Ion 1.0/2.0

  • Rear-load bolt system — the entire reason the XE exists. See the dedicated Rear-Load Bolt page.
  • One-piece fire chamber and body breech, combined into a single part accessed from the back — versus the Ion 1.0's separate, screwed-in fire chamber and body breech, which need the body split to reach.
  • No swivel donut — the rear grip frame screw and banjo fitting thread directly into the body breech instead.
  • Body and feedneck are their own thing — the rear-load body doesn't accept Ion 1.0/2.0 body kits, and the feedneck uses NXT threading instead of the Ion/Shocker SFT threading the rest of the family shares.
  • Bolt stop is XE-specific — the bolt itself is identical across the whole family, but the bolt stop is slightly different here, so don't assume a 1.0/2.0 bolt stop is a drop-in match.
  • Grip frame carries its own serial sticker — visible through the grip cutout once the grips are open, reading "I0005576" on the sample photographed, next to a small target/reticle icon. This is a completely separate number from the body breech serial number stamped on every Ion generation — don't conflate the two. Not confirmed on the Ion 1.0/2.0's frame; may be XE-specific.
